| On August 10th 2002, BONFIRES will be lit again across the ALPS, honoring the precious and delicate life, which exists in this rough environment and needs protection against man's inconsiderate exploitations of nature. In the night of August 9th, LI FLAMA DE SAN LORENZ (the flames of Saint Lorenz, the martyred patron saint of Oga) are lit above Oga, Valdisotto, near Bormio (I) in rememberence of the flames which burnt this saint at the stake. Next to one of these bonfires MUSIC will be played, intended to reinforce the awareness of ALPINE LIFE and to sing its praises. The music will be an ode to the SACRED MOUNTAIN. Through this music we want to express our admiration and care for the mountain. MUSIC is a GESTURE OF GRATITUDE; it is a GIFT. A SHRINE will be erected by the mountainous stage, and will be decorated with flags in reference to Tibetan Buddhism, as well as our regional stone piles that mark our alpine paths. To build the shrine, stones will be piled around a long wooden pole, forming a tall, conical shape. The flags (also including Tibetan prayer-flags) will be fastened to the pole and moved by the wind. For one year this shrine will mark this place. The concert of the FREE FORM ENSEMBLE will take place on the southern side of the Bernina pass, in a natural theatre next to the roman road at La Rösa, while the flames of the ALPINE BONFIRE dance. It will be followed by OLAF RUPP playing guitar beside the glowing embers. The previous day, the FREE FORM ENSEMBLE will make its debut performance in BORMIO, VALTELLINA, at 6 p.m. In the afternoon at 2 p.m. before the performance, there will be a PRESENTATION of the SECOND REPORT OF THE STATE OF THE ALPS by Cipra (International Commission for the Protection of the Alps). This presentation is organized by Legambiente - Circolo di Bormio. The speakers are: DAMIANO DI SIMINE, President of CIPRA Italia, ANNIBALE SALSA, Vice President of Club Alpino Italiano e CIPRA Italia, ARNOLDO TUENA, Head of the public transport of the Ferrovia Retica, Grisons and GIOVANNI BETTINI, Legambiente Valtellina. The project THE NET OF THE INTERACTIVE TV OF THE ALPS will also be presented by ARC (Alp Research Community). The traveling exhibition of Legambiente LA CAROVANA DELLE ALPI will be present at the events of the 9th and 10th August. The FREE FORM ENSEMBLE will be led by ALAN SILVA (bass), and features ABDELHAI BENNANI (tenor saxophone), SATO MAKOTO (drums), members of the band THE INCARNATORS with JESUS CANNELONI (percussion), and DIETER SCHENK (gongs), CO STREIFF (alto and soprano saxophone), TOMI MEIER (bass clarinet), MARC STUTZ-BOUKOUYA (tenor and bass trombone), PIERRE ZEIDLER (baritone saxophone, Zeidlerfon), GYOHEI ZAITSU (butho dance), MAKI WATANABE (butho dance) as well as STUDENTS of the music school Poschiavo (CH), Grosio (I), Sondrio (I) and the jazz school of Tirano (I). Parts of the installation 'share' (UNCOOL 2001) of CORNELIA MÜLLER will also be involved. There will be two days of rehearsals of the FREE FORM ENSEMBLE in Poschiavo (August 7th and 8th). The rehearsals are free and open to the public. The mountains, bonfire, music, and shrine will be captured by the video+soundartist Götz Rogge and presented in a real-time streaming mixdown for www.uncool.ch (please contact goetzsin@hotmail.com for further information). Another video documentary with the participation of children is planned by ARC - Alp Research Community - and THE NET OF THE LOCAL INTERACTIVE TV. As an active contribution for the protection of the environment a biglietto musica (music-ticket) will be available, which offers public transportation for free with the midnight nightshuttle from Bormio to Poschiavo or from La Rösa to Bormio which makes stops upon request.
